Many residents responding to my 'Big Crime Survey' have told me that they want to make our streets safer by extending and improving CCTV coverage in the borough. There's good news as the government has provided money through the Safer Streets Fund to improve local CCTV.
During my time as Policing Minister I saw on many occasions how making small improvements to a particular area - through the extension of CCTV, closing off alleyways and increasing street lighting provision - can make a huge difference. I am delighted that the Home Office has confirmed that the Borough Council was successful in their recent bid to the Safer Streets Fund to pay for a variety of improvements across Great Yarmouth and Gorleston. This funding, alongside the council’s match funding, will address many of the concerns raised by residents and make your community safer.
This additional funding will:
- Extend CCTV coverage to the Wellesley area of Great Yarmouth'
- Improve street lighting in the Belvedere Road area
- Provide additional CCTV coverage in Gorleston around the Magdalen and James Paget University Hospital area
If you wish to let me know your opinion on crime and anti-social behaviour there's still time to take just a few minutes to complete my crime survey here. Your responses will assist me in making the case to our new Police and Crime Commissioner for increased resources for Great Yarmouth and set localised priorities for policing in our neighbourhoods.
