Watching the recent TV debates featuring candidates for the leadership of our Conservative Party, and to be our next Prime Minister, was a dismal experience. As a former Chairman of the Conservative Party, I was dismayed to see the damage caused to our great political party as Labour exploited the unnecessary divisions created by a media desperate to over-hype every disagreement and magnify punchlines. In an article published today on Conservative Home, I set out why this political circus adds nothing to the proper scrutiny of the leadership candidates. Instead, the detailed, measured, and probing questioning Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss will face from Conservative Party members at hustings and meetings across the country is a far more effective mechanism.
