This an important step forward, putting in place for new immigration arrangements now that we have left the European Union. As a Home Office Minister, I was involved in the background work getting ready for our new immigration rules to be agreed by Parliament. So, I am delighted to see that it now begins its progress to become law. As the new Immigration Minister, Kevin Foster has said, "This bill marks the momentous first step towards ending free movement, taking back control of our borders, and delivering on the people’s priorities."
This will end the European Union rules on the free movement of persons. It also paves the way for a firmer and fairer points-based immigration system that will set out the requirements needed to come to the UK as a worker, student or family member. I know that taking back control of our borders and ending the free movement rules, was so important for those Great Yarmouth residents who voted to leave the European Union. I am delighted that those important changes will soon be a reality.
