A Planning Regulation Revolution.

I  welcome the publication of the National Planning Policy Framework. Under plans announced by Greg Clark, Minister for Decentralisation, planning rules have been transformed and simplified into a short 50 page document. Previously the collected rules ran to thousands of pages. The minister also outlined new measures to free up land for housing and business development whilst removing barriers for growth and enabling sustainable development. The document goes on to include a ‘town centre first’

Meeting on A47

I have successfully persuaded Transport Minister Mike Penning MP, to hold a summit on the A47, a vital transport link. Every Norfolk MP as well as representatives from the County Council will be invited to attend, and it represents a brilliant opportunity to move the A47 up the priority list of central government. I have  been lobbying for this development for several months, and am a passionate advocate for the need to improve the A47. Hopefully this

Welcoming New Homes Cash for Great Yarmouth

The Government has given Great Yarmouth Borough Council a welcome £1/2 million boost, as part of the New Homes Bonus. The New Homes Bonus is a multi-billion pound programme that rewards communities when they accept more housebuilding in their area, with extra reward for building new affordable homes, and for getting long-term empty homes back into use. This is just one of the policies the Government has introduced to help resolve the current housing crisis. These

Fair Fares campaign even more important

With over 12,000 people signing the Fair Fares petition to protect bus services in Norfolk and to receive a better funding package from the government, our campaign goes from strength to strength. However, new figures revealed by the county council this week underline the importance of keeping up the pressure on ministers. A report to senior councillors suggest that on top of the current £4.5 million funding shortfall, they face an additional £800,000 gap in

Great Yarmouth shows Eric Pickles MP its very best

I was delighted to welcome the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP to Great Yarmouth on Thursday the  27th October. The main theme of Mr Pickles’ visit was that of partnership, and how it can be used to overcome the challenges faced by councils and businesses in Great Yarmouth. I took Mr Pickles to a number of meetings intended to showcase how partnership working was driving down costs for the local council; and

Being Quizzed by Whizz-Kids

I got more than I bargained for at The Conservative Party Conference, when Max Sampson,17 year old Ambassador for the charity Whizz-Kidz, turned interviewer and started to grill me!  Whizz-Kidz – which provides vital wheelchairs, life skills, and work opportunities for young disabled people – quizzed MPs to see how in-touch they are with popular culture. Questions included, what is the most played album on their MP3 player, and how often do they search for themselves online.

Are the wheels coming off our bus service?

This is a copy of my article about rural bus funding wirtten for the ePolitix website and published ahead of my debate in the House of Commons today. The wheels on the bus will fall off over the next few years if the government fails to reform transport funding and the Concessionary Fares Scheme. If it does, it will be those in the shire-counties, particularly the rural areas, which will suffer the most. The bus
