On Friday I visited Great Yarmouth fire station for the first time since becoming the minister responsible for fire services.
During my visit I met the Chairman of the Fire and Community Safety Panel, Cllr Richard Rockcliffe and Chief Fire Officer Nigel Williams. I also met by eight firefighters who gave me a practical demonstration of how they rescue people trapped in cars after road traffic accidents. We then had an interesting chat about their job and the challenges that they face on a day to day basis.
It was a real pleasure to visit Great Yarmouth station again, especially now that I am the minister responsible for fire services. It was very important to me that my first station visit in this capacity was to my home station. I really enjoyed hearing more about life as a firefighter – I am always in awe of their dedication and bravery in protecting our communities day in, day out.
To top off an enjoyable visit, they also let me have a go at using their hydraulic shears!
