The cross-party No To AV campaign team has been touring around the UK to promote keeping the current electoral system and vote against the introduction of the ‘Alternative Vote’ system in the national referendum on 5th May. Today they joined me at the Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth to highlight the campaign in this area.
It was great to see so many campaigners out this morning to show their support for No To AV. The referendum which will decide the future of Britain’s electoral system is nearly here and it is essential that the residents of Great Yarmouth are informed about the true effects of introducing the Alternative Vote and what it would mean on a local and national basis.
An introduction of AV would be a terrible blow to our democracy and would see our tried and tested voting system replaced by a complicated, expensive and unfair system that gives some people more votes than others. Not only would it see Government’s formed through backroom deals but it would also mean winning candidates would be elected on the electorate’s second and third choice votes. I feel it is important to defend the principle of one person, one vote – and that is why I am voting No To AV on 5th May.
