I was saddened to hear yesterday that Baroness Margaret Thatcher has passed away following a stroke. While it was common knowledge that her health had been deteriorating for some time, the news still came as a shock.
I was honoured to receive my Economics degree from Lady Thatcher at my graduation ceremony – she had long been a political hero of mine, so it was a big day for me personally. Margaret Thatcher came to power at a time of real economic difficulty. She took the tough decisions necessary to turn the country around, leading to a long period of prosperity that benefitted families and businesses across the UK. She did all this as the first female Prime Minister, operating in a male-dominated environment. Every day she had to be more persuasive and more impressive than her peers – something she achieved to such an impressive level that she became the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th Century.
She was a dedicated public servant who made it possible for families across the UK to prosper. May she rest in peace.
