It is welcome news that Great Yarmouth charities and organisations will soon be able to benefit from additional funding. The Government announced today that it will establish a multi-million pound fund which will be exclusively reserved for coastal towns. This will be financed by earmarking half of the funds generated by the Crown Estate’s maritime assets. The Big Fund (part of the National Lottery) will administer the fund.
Since my election, I have worked with several other MPs from coastal towns to highlight the specific problems faced by coastal communities. The creation of this fund is an example of how effective such concerted campaigning can be.
I am a big supporter of the voluntary sector in Great Yarmouth, and two weeks ago wrote to every registered charity within the Borough to gauge interest in holding a forum where we can bring charities together to discuss how they can move forward in these difficult times. The response so far has been very positive and I am currently attempting to arrange a suitable venue. Accessing this fund as well as others will be among the main topics of conversation during this meeting.
This new fund is a sign that finally after 13 years of neglect by the previous Labour Government, the unique problems facing coastal communities like ours, are finally being taken seriously. This fund will help to support the hard work already taking place in Great Yarmouth. I am looking forward to discussing with local groups how they can take advantage of this exciting new opportunity.
