Being tough on rioters is “right-wing” say Labour

The front page splash in The Observer today is a leaked Labour strategy document that recommends branding David Cameron as a “recognisably right-wing” prime minister.

The basis of this advice is partly attributed to the government’s response to the recent riots. Apparently, vowing to confront a moral collapse in society and urging the courts to hand out tough sentences to rioters and looters is unnecessarily right-wing. The overwhelming public opinion suggests otherwise, they despair at the thuggish behaviour and want a tough response. I haven’t been approached by anyone telling me we are being too tough on the offenders. It looks as though Labour are desperately clutching at straws again.
