Fair Fuel UK
The biggest challenge the majority of households across the Great Yarmouth constituency face, is the crippling cost of fuel prices at the petrol pump. A key pledge in the Conservative Party manifesto was the introduction of a fuel stabiliser so that motorists would no longer be exposed to fluctuating oil costs and ever-increasing price rises.
Labour introduced a fuel duty escalator that saw seven eye-watering fuel duty hikes before they left office. In this year’s Budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer cancelled Labour’s 5p tax increase, instead cutting duty by 1p. That meant fuel prices were 6p a litre cheaper than if Labour had remained in Government. Despite a £1.9 billion package to help motorists, we need to do much more.
That is why I am backing the Fair Fuel campaign in Parliament by signing and supporting a motion calling for the Government to:
• Scrap the planned 4p increase in fuel duty in January 2012;
• Introduce a price stabiliser to smooth out fluctuations in pump prices;
• Pressure oil companies to pass on cheaper oil to motorists;
• Study ways of introducing longer term cuts in fuel taxes.
The Fair Fuel debate on 15th November is a result of the campaign launched by Fair Fuel UK and the 110,000 people who signed the e-petition calling for this important issue to be considered in the House of Commons.
